Exotic Pet Health Insurance

Exotic pet health insurance used to be hard to find, but now you should be able to find a policy for almost all exotic pets. Most companies still only cover dogs and cats, but more and more are covering exotic animals like turtles, ferrets, and chinchillas.

Exotic Animals

Just some of the animals that you can buy coverage for include tortoises, rabbits, rats, potbellied pigs, possums, iguanas, guinea pigs, gerbils, chinchillas, and amphibians.

Just about any animals that are not either a dog or a cat can be covered under an exotic pet health insurance policy.

Exotic Coverage

The amount of coverage you get with a pet insurance policy varies greatly from company to company. However most will cover basic medical treatments and surgeries. And almost all basic policies will cover accidents and illnesses. You might need to buy a more comprehensive policy in order to cover x-rays, and hospitalizations.

Depending on your type of policy, you may be either be reimbursed a percentage of the bill, or reimbursed on a benefit schedule. Generally being reimbursed as a percentage of your veterinary bill is better than being paid on a benefit schedule. Ultimately the decision is up to you.

Should I Buy Exotic Pet Insurance?

Whether or not you should buy a policy for your exotic pet is up to you, but here are some factors to consider:

How much did you pay for your pet?
How old is your pet?
How long will your pet likely live?

Sadly, for most exotic pets they are very inexp'nsive, and so it doesnÕt make much sense financially to pay a monthly pet insurance premium for these, but ultimately it is up to e. .
