Female Cat Bullying Male Kitten

by Debbie

I have a problem with cat bullying. One cat picking and chasing another cat, keeping it in certain areas. If he leaves those areas the female cat will chase him back, and lunges, one time she had him trapped in the litter box, the poor little guy pooped all over his fur trying to take a submissive posture, it makes me mad, I've tried rubbing scents on each other, it seemed to be working until she caught him in a room and she runs to attack, almost screaming. I love them both and looking for a way to make friends, drugs are out of the question, she does play ruff with the other cats too, some won't look her in the eyes, and tip toe , she is under the age of 2, and this cat is very attached to me, I've seen her lunge in an attack towards the other cats when they came by me and she's there, I've been locking her up in a room when it gets too much. for a punishment, and won't pay any attention after her bad behavior, she very sweet, otherwise.

Thanks Debbie M.

Good Morning Debbie,

Sorry to hear about your cat problems. It seems like you have tried a lot of things to help your cats out so far.

I'll assume the cat is spayed, if not that often helps a lot.

Also, locking her up in the room is good when she misbehaves, and something that I often recommend.

Some cats barely seem to tolerate each other, I believe it has to do with how they are treated as kittens by their mother.

This cat obviously has a very strong will, so you have to be consistent in your treatment of her.

I would try and bond with the male cat as much as possible when you are around.

Also, I would lock her up when you are not around to supervise them.

She needs to get the message that the other cat is as important as she is.

So you have to protect him at all times, and if you are not around you have to lock one of them up, otherwise her bullying will go unpunished.

It definitely won't be easy for you because she is a very strong willed cat.

You may also want to think about putting a separate set of food bowls and litter boxes somewhere else in the house. This may help to decrease her protectiveness of "her" property.

How long have you had the male cat? If is it just recent, this behavior is normal. Most cats give up this behavior once they realize that the other cat is not going away.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
