Flat-Coated Retriever Dog Breed Profileby Dr. Chris AKC Group: Sporting Group The Flat-Coated Retriever was developed from regular Labrador dogs, and became its own separate breed. Originally from the UK, it was used a water/hunting dog, and its long coat kept it warm in cold weather. Like other Labs, this breed makes a great family dog. HistoryThe Flat-Coated Retriever was originally bred from Retriever Proper, mix-breed appearing on the spaniel, setter, Large Newfoundland, sheepdog-like water canines. This retriever was very helpful to fishers and frequently exchanged between North America and Britain, where they were often identified as universal Labrador dogs. At some point, the breed became known as the Wavy-Coated Retriever and became its own breed. Later it adopted the name Falt-coated retrievers.Physical FeaturesIdeal height is twenty three to twenty four and a half inches for males, twenty two to twenty three and a half inches for bitches. Considering that Flat-Coat is gainfully employed as a hunting retriever he must be kept in hard and lean condition, free from unwanted weight. The medium length, fine, thick coat lays flat on the body and is available in solid liver, or a solid black, with well-feathered chest, legs and tail. This dog is a robust but cheerful, elegant hunting retriever.PersonalityPersonality is outstanding and a primary quality of Flat-Coated Retrievers. He's a reactive, loving family member, an adaptable bright, sensible, multi-talented, and tractable working dog.Like all dogs needs to be properly trained. Known to be a quick learner, this dog is great for novice trainers. Common Health ProblemsCancer is common, as well as congestive heart disease, diabetes, epilepsy, hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy are sometimes seen.Return to: Complete AKC Dog Breed List To read more blog posts go here: Veterinary Blog To sign up for my newsletter go here: Veterinary Newsletter Top 10 Things I Wish I'd Learned in Veterinary School FLAVORx Introduces Digital Flavorist Software |
