Flea and Flea Control
I think my pet has fleas? What is the best approach to get rid of fleas?
Get rid of fleas forever with this approach!
During the summer is the primetime for fleas. Fleas are insects that are dark brown, and very small, but visible to the human eye. Flea bites are extremely irritating to pets. Bites look like little red spots. Because flea bites are extremely irritating, your pet will scratch very intensely. Other signs include chewing at their paws or fur, and allergies.
Fleas bite pets to feed on their blood. Fleas need blood to complete their life cycle. One of the reasons why fleas are so hard to get rid of is that they can reproduce every 14 days. One adult flea can produce hundreds of eggs is a very short time!
What to do if you have fleas
With all the new products on the market effective flea control is easier than ever. When treating pets for fleas, there are several things to keep in mind. The fleas that you actually see only make up 1% of all the fleas present. 99% of the fleas are present as eggs or larve, so it is important you do several things.
One. The fastest way to get rid of fleas on dogs and cats is with a product called Capstar. The great thing about this product is that it begins to work in only 30 minutes. In 30 minutes you can SEE the fleas falling off dead! Capstar can be used even in puppies and kittens as young as four weeks, and can be used in pregnant animals. You can find Capstar 26-125lbs Tab 6's at most online pet pharmacies. It is available in various sizes for dogs and cats.
TWO. Provide relief from skin irriation and scratching for your pet. I often recommend a shampoo to my clients made by Gerard Pelham. Its called Dermagard Medicated Shampoo. I think this is one of the best shampoos that you can buy. It contains hydrocortisone to provide relief from scratching, and also reduces inflammation and moisturizes too. The best part is that it only takes one bath to see results. Dermagard Medicated Shampoo 8oz Bottle can be bought from your Vet or online.
THREE. Future prevention with a topical or oral flea preventative. The largest maker of this product is Merial who makes Frontline, and Frontline Plus. For those of you who want the cheapest way to treat fleas this is it. It promises to kill 100% of the fleas on you pet within 18 hours. It also lasts one whole month and is water resistant. It is safe enough to use on puppies and kittens as young as 8 weeks. Due to competition in fleas products, it can be found cheaply on the internet. For example,Frontline 6pk Medium 23-44 Lbs , costs only about $10 a month. For cats and smaller dogs it is even cheaper.
FOUR. It is important that you also treat the environment too. Like I said earlier 99% of the fleas are not on your pet! Instead they are in your yard or house waiting to jump on your pet when they walk by. Two products that my clients have liked in the past are a yard spray and a room fogger made by Virbac. Virbac makes a lot of great products. The Virbac Yard Spray Concentrate 16 Oz , and the Virbac Knockout Room & Area Fogger 6 Oz are fairly cheap and they kill ticks, cockroaches, spiders, and ants!
Summary: Fleas are easily treated and preventable, work with your Vet to help keep your pet healthy.
