German Shepherd that constantly chases her tail

by Myria
(Wahiawa, Hawaii, USA)

I have a German Shepherd that constantly chases her tail. She'll lick and bite at it until she brings blood at times. Her hair on her tail is much much shorter and more course than the rest of her coat from her pulling it out. I have taken her to the vet and they have just told me that it "could be" an allergy to something, it "could be" a nervous habit, it "could be hot spots" and so on. It seems like everytime I take her to the vet, it "could be" something different. I know that she is showing signs of all of these "could be's" and I understand that. It's just that this problem is extremly aggervating for both my dog and me. I give her a bath once a week in medicated shampoo that the vet gave me, I also use a cream that the vet gave me which really doesn't do much good because she ends up licking or rubbing it off. I also give her flea medicine every month like I'm suspose to. Everything that the vet has offered to me I have done. I paid a lot of money for my dog, so I'm willing to do what is needed to help her. Can you offer any advice to me that may help? Thank you in advance for your time.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Myria. You need to find someone who specializes in dog behavior. From your description it appears to be a behavioral problem. Most good behaviorists can help you with this, but it might also take some medication to calm him down a bit, until he unlearns this behavior. This condition is dogs is not too uncommon, in Vet school I saw a case similar to this and it requried sedating the dog for a while until the behaivor stopped. Please look for a vet who understands dog behavior.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
