German Wirehaired Pointer Dog Breed Profile

The German Wirehaired Pointer was one of Germany's greatest hunting dogs. With its characteristically wiry coat and beard and wiskers, it stands apart from the rest. This multi-function hunting dog is very affectionate and makes a great family dog.

History

The majority of the German Wirehaired Pointers display a mix of German shorthair, Griffon, Pudelpointer and Stichelhaar. The Germans also mixed the unique characteristics of foxhounds, Poodles and Pointers until they'd developed what's nowadays the German Wirehair, a brave breed who retrieves and points evenly well on land and in the water.

Physical Features

Males are usually twenty four to twenty six inches tall, and females are usually twenty two inches tall. To guarantee the functionality of the breed, dogs who are over an inch out of this range are penalized.

The coat is white and liver, typically either white or spotted liver, liver and spotted white with liver roan ticking, and roaring or solid liver. The ears are liver. The head is liver, often with white blaze. Any black at the coat shall be seriously penalized.

Personality

The German wirehaired pointer is quite intelligent and active. Wanting to learn and faithful to their family, they require a trainer with a firm demeanor. They enjoy being preoccupied and employed by their master. They're friendly to those they know, but could be distant with unknown people and should be socialized ideally while very young. When they sense their masters are passive or meek they might become rather stubborn. Their hunting intuition tends to make them wander.

Common Health Problems

Some lines are susceptible to ear infections, genetic eye disease, hip dysplasia and skin cancers.
