Global Warming Affecting Dogs?

July 4th, 2009 The number of heartworm cases has gone up over the last few years, particularly in the South where most cases happen. The warming of the climate leads to mosquitoes being more active for a greater period of the year.

Mosquitoes spread heartworm disease between dogs. Dogs cannot get it from each other. There needs to be a mosquito for it to be transmitted.

In the South and even in most of the country it is more and more common for vets to recommend year around heartworm protection.

Sadly though at least 50% of pet owners either miss giving the monthly dose or don't give anything at all.

With the increased risk of your dog getting heartworm disease, make sure you follow your local vet's recommendation for heartworm prevention in your area.

If you your dog does end up getting heartworm disease, the treatment is a painful and long process for the dog.
