Golden Retriever Dog

AKC Group: Sporting Group

The Golden Retriever is always one of the most popular dog breeds in America. Known for it long golden hair coat, it makes for a great and active family dog. Its intelligence also makes it useful as a guide and rescue dog.

The Golden Retriever came from the Scottish Highlands during the late 19th century and was utilized mainly for hunting. The dog breed was created by Lord Tweedmouth, whose objective was to make an exceptional retriever suitable for the Scottish climate, terrain, and game. He crossed his original "Yellow Retriever" with a Tweed Water Spaniel kept at his house. Afterwards integrations of Bloodhound, Irish setter and much more Tweed Water Spaniel developed the retriever we all know these days.

Physical Features

An active, powerful, symmetrical dog, well build and sound, not clumsy nor lengthy at the leg, showing a kindly appearance and holding a character that's alert, eager and self-confident. Mainly a hunting dog that must be proven in a hard working situation. Overall look, balance, gait and objective to be provided more importance than some of his parts.

Males reach a height of 23 to 24 inches tall and females normally reach a height of 21 to 23 inches tall. Dogs that are 1 inch below or above normal sizes are penalized in shows. Weight is usually about 55 to 75 pounds.

The coat could be straight or wavy with feathering at the back of the legs. Any gold colored shade is allowed. Any white markings are penalized.

Golden Retrievers are known to be loving, well-mannered, clever dogs with superb appeal. They are very easily trained, and usually gentle and patient with children. Captivating, dedicated and self-assured, they're a trendy family dog. Loving and lively, Golden Retrievers love to please their masters, so behavior training can be quite rewarding. Friendly with everybody, as well as other dogs, the Golden Retriever has almost no protecting intuition. While not likely to fight, Goldens make great watchdogs, fully warning of a stranger's approach.

Common Health Problems

Susceptible to cancer, Von Willebrand's disease, hip dysplasia, genetic eye defects and heart disease. Skin allergies are typical in Golden Retrievers and frequently need veterinarian attention. Gains weight very easily, don't overfeed.
