Golden Retriever puppy vomiting

by Edwin
(Inland Empire, CA)

Dear Vet,

I have just picked up an 8 weeks old CKC Golden Retriever puppy on Monday. Everything seems ok; he is active, playful, and full of energy. However, this puppy will vomit after every meal (Purina Puppy Chow). Moreover, there is a unique thing about it: he will find a quiet place in my backyard and let all the food out from his mouth, and “Re-Chew” and finish this meal.

It appears that he will try to put the food into his stomach as quickly as he can during the meal, and “Re-Chew” the food at a safe place later. He came from a family with other 12 Golden Retriever puppies and a small size backyard.

Thanks advance for your help,
Edwin

Hi Edwin,

There are several reasons why a puppy might vomit. If you think the puppy is eating too fast, try feeding him smaller meals and that should fix the problem.

It could also be more severe like a congenital problem with the esophagus or gastritis. Many of these problems don't show up until the puppy starts to eat solid food.

Try the smaller meals first and if the vomiting continues talk to your vet right away.

thanks,

Dr. Chris
