AKC Group: Hound Group The Greyhound dog is the fastest of all dog breeds. Originally used for hunting, it is now used mainly for racing. But is popularity is growing as a show dog and this breed also makes a great family pet. HistoryOne of the oldest breeds ever, proof of the Greyhound was initially found in grave carvings in Egypt in the year 2900 B.C. Nobility and tradition has always ornamented the Greyhound, and in earlier times only the wealthy bred them. As predators in England, they were utilized for almost all sorts of game from deer, foxes and stags; however the hare is Greyhound's purely natural quarry. In the United States, Greyhounds came with Spanish explorers in 1500's and were one of the first dogs documented at American dog events. Physical FeaturesThe dog is a tall thin dog. His head is narrow and long, wide amongst the ears, with a lengthy tapering snout. The little flower ears are placed back and flattened and are semi-perked when they're thrilled. The eyes are dark in color. The long neck is slightly arched. The legs are lengthy with the front legs being beautifully straight. The chest is deep and wide. The lengthy tail tapers with a minor upward contour. The short, fine coat is available in all shades. Greyhounds normally weigh 65 to 70 pounds, with females slightly lighter. As for height they normally reach 28 to 30 inches high. PersonalityThe Greyhound is courageous and loyal.
