Harrier Dog Breed Profileby Luke AKC Group: Hound Group The Harrier dog is a medium sized hound which looks like the English Foxhound. Slightly bigger then the Beagle, the Harrier makes a great family pet because of its size and great temperament. HistoryThe Harrier's recognition in England arose because of his sluggish hunting pace in the pack so hunters could follow on foot. Regardless of the stories concerning the ancient roots of Harrier, most think that the dogs were bred closely in proportion to the English Foxhounds. Harriers have been around in America for hundreds of years and were used as scent hounds during Colonial times.Physical FeaturesThey're very durable and have developed big bones relative to their size. They need to be active, healthy, and full of quality and strength, in all ways appearing capable of working relentlessly, regardless of the terrain, for very long periods. Scenting and running ability are specifically important characteristics.Height of females is about 19 to 21 inches, and males a bit taller. They weigh about 45 to 60 pounds. A dense, glossy, hard and short coat. Coat texture on the ears is better as compared on the body. There's a brush of hair at the underside of tail. PersonalityPleasant, tolerant and sweet-tempered, it is great with kids. This pack dog is great with other breeds, but must be monitored with non-canine animals. They're watchful and determined and require patient, strict training. Friendly and outgoing, as a working pack dog, Harriers must have the capacity to work in close connection with other hounds. Consequently, aggressiveness to other dogs can't be accepted. This active dog loves to go wander, discovering, trailing and sniffing.Common Health ProblemsTypically healthy, some happen to be proven to acquire epilepsy and hip dysplasia.Return to: Complete AKC Dog Breed List To read more blog posts go here: Veterinary Blog To sign up for my newsletter go here: Veterinary Newsletter Top 10 Things I Wish I'd Learned in Veterinary School FLAVORx Introduces Digital Flavorist Software |
