This tip might not be for everyone. To save a lot of money on vet bills, you can get all but the rabies shots at a farm store and give the cats or dogs or both a majority of their yearly vaccinations yourself. It really saves a lot of time and money. You still need to see your vet for the rabies shots and any other medical needs, but this can be a place to start to cut down on the bills.
