How to trim dog's nail

by Ken
(CA)

Nails are overgrown. Is it better to sedate and cut a lot of the nail, or cut a little at a time? Will the inside recede the more nail I cut?

Hi Ken,

Depending on the temperament and health of the dog sedation may or may not be a good idea.

It would be best to trim a little of the nail at a time being careful not to cut into the kwik.

If you haven't trimmed dog nails before have a vet tech show you how and then learn to do it for yourself if you feel confident.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
