I keep certain medications on hand...

For my horses, I typically have drugs such as bute, banamine, and SMZs on hand and ready to use.
If I have a problem, I call my vet and he will advise me either to medicate and call him if there's a further problem, or not to medicate and he'll be right out. The phone call doesn't cost me anything, and if a problem is easily resolved with a dose of Banamine, for example, then I've saved at least $100 in farm call charges.
