Ibizan Hound Dog Breed Profileby Alice AKC Group: Hound Group The Ibizan Hound dog as a very elegant look. With its large pointed ears, amber colored eyes, and tapered body, this is a very dapper looking dog. Originally used to hunt rabbits, it is now a great family dog. HistoryIn old Egypt roughly 3400 BC there have been depictions of twisted tailed hounds similar in appearance to contemporary Ibizan Hounds. It's thought that sea traders, probably the Phoenicians, took these old dogs to different foreign lands like Ibiza, an isle off the region of Spain. They were utilized to chase rabbits and to deliver food on their own and the isle people.Physical FeaturesThe Ibizan's ears are large and pointed with clean-cut lines. Racy and lithe, the Ibizan owns a deer like classiness joined with the strength of a hunter. Robust, without appearing greatly muscled. With the exemption of the ears, he shouldn't look exaggerated or extreme. The height of the dogs is between 23 and 27 inches tall. Bitches are 22 to 26 inches tall. There's more hair on the back of thighs, back, and tail. Both kinds of coat (smooth and wire) are rough in texture nor is one coat considered better than the other. Red or white in any mixture. No pattern or color is better than the other. PersonalityIbizan Hounds, often called "Beezers" by their fanciers, are clean, playful, polite and quiet. Good with kids, sensitive, sensible and gentle. Protective and relatively independent. Tense around strangers, but when they decide the unfamiliar person means no harm, they'll relax quickly. The Ibizan hound is even-tempered, loyal and affectionate. Very trainable, he creates an excellent family dog, and is suitable to the tracking and hunting trials. He exhibits an enthusiastic, natural hunting impulse with much perseverance and stamina at the field.Common Health ProblemsThe Ibizan hound is strong and hardy, but could have allergies to drugs, such as flea powders and insecticides. Some lines are vulnerable to seizures. This dog has a genetic tendency for Axonal Dystrophy, a muscle and nerve illness.Return to: Complete AKC Dog Breed List To read more blog posts go here: Veterinary Blog To sign up for my newsletter go here: Veterinary Newsletter Top 10 Things I Wish I'd Learned in Veterinary School FLAVORx Introduces Digital Flavorist Software |
