HistoryPopular in Ireland since 17th century, the Irish Red and White Setter is regarded as the older of the 2 Irish Setters. Nevertheless, because of the overwhelming interest in its sturdy red cousin, and individual breeding of the 2 breeds, the Irish setter was almost extinct by the end of the 1800's. In the 1920's, efforts were created to restore the Irish setter and in the 1940's, the dog started to reemerge in Ireland.Physical FeaturesThe look is robust and impressive, proportioned and well balanced without lumber; athletic instead of racy having an aristocratic look. Fine silky long hair called 'Feathering' occurs on back of hind and fore legs and also on the ear flap.The color base is white with solid red patches; both shades show the utmost of bloom and life. They are 24.5 - 26 inches high; and the bitches are 22.5 - 24 inches high. They normally weigh 50 to 70 pounds. PersonalityIrish Red and White Setters are affectionate, energetic, full of energy high spirited, intelligent and loving. Impulsive, with a free spirit.Common Health ProblemsIrish Red and White Setters are susceptible to von Willebrand's disease, PPC a somewhat minor type of cataract, which does not usually cause blindness.
