AKC Group: Sporting Group The Irish Setter dog is the most unique of the Sporting dogs. Originally used as a hunting dog, it's silky red coat has made it very popular among families. Intelligent and active, it is a quick learner. HistoryThe Irish Setter became famous in the 1700's all over British Isles and Ireland. Produced from a mixture of English setter, Irish terrier, Irish Water Spaniel, Pointer, Spaniel and a splash of Gordon setter, this dog was originally accustomed to game setting. Stooping low close to birds so the hunters can go up and heave a net on dog and bird. When the use of guns increased, their popularity declined.Physical FeaturesThis Irish Setter is an an aristocratic, active bird dog. The coat is red, glossy, and straight. The hair is longer on the back of legs, chest ears and tail.Height of 27 inches at the withers and a weight around 70 is regarded perfect for the dog. The bitch is normally around 25 inches tall and weighs about 60 pounds. Difference over and above an inch up or down is usually penalized. PersonalityThese breeds are affectionate, energetic, and full of energy, high-spirited, intelligent and loving. Great with other pets, and great with kids. They're very swift, having a superb sense of smell. Sturdy over land under all conditions.Common Health ProblemsThe Irish Setter dog has a tendency to bloat. It could be a good idea to feed two or three small meals a day rather than one big one. Susceptible to an auto-immune disease elbow & hip dysplasia, epilepsy, eye problems like PRA, hypothyroidism and severe skin allergies.
