Is Cat a Picky Eater or Just Not Interested in Food?

by Taylor

Morning Dr Chris

Thank you for getting back to me. Much appreciated.

I know you are a UK based veterinarian, but from having received your newsletters for quite some time, I see too, you are quite the caring person when it comes to animals. Hope you don't mind, I would like to have a chat with you.

I adopted a kitten from Animal Welfare here in the most southern parts of South Africa almost four years ago, and have lived in almost rural type areas since I adopted my kitten. (bushlike terrain and forest areas). The kitten in question, Samantha, has been an absolutely happy cat running around in these bushlike conditions, to the point of almost being wild, eating snakes, lizards, bird, rat and mice and insects. I know this as she brings some of the wildlife home.

My concern about my cat is, since kittenhood, I have been feeding her sachets of Purina foods which I warm up for her and all she does, is drink the warm liquid, and promptly leaves the meat pieces. I also on a daily basis leave a plate of Hill's Science Plan pellets, for her, should she still be hungry. She eats the pellets late at night when she is hungry, but it seems she would rather be out there hunting for critters. I know that Samantha is still hungry, after having had the food I prepare for her twice daily, as she proceeds to howl after her morning feeds, and promptly goes out hunting.

Dr Chris, I have had her checked by a Vet who mentioned that he could see nothing wrong with her, and I know too, that cat's have a tendency to play their owners (she has me wrapped around her little paws I promise you) but my kitten is still hungry, (this I know) or she would not howl like this?

Since kittenhood, she has been a fussy cat and I have tried just about everything there is to try and please her, but I am of the opinion there is something lacking. Might I mention, she does not eat seafood's at all, only beef, fowl liver and vegetables. I also on a daily basis, give her a dose of Nutrostim supplement for obvious reasons. Might I mention that it is beyond my means to feed her Iums which I know cats are crazy about, but I am quite concerned about her? She occasionally gets yoghurt which she loves and dried pieces of sausage (known as wors in South Africa.

All I want to know is, am I being played by my kitten, or is there anything else I could give her that would make her content and be filled?

Hoping you could give me advice and thank you for listening

Regards, Taylor

ANSWER:

Hi Taylor,

First of all, it seems like your cat has quite an interesting life being able to hunt all the time!

Many cats are picky eaters, that is just the way they are.

(By the way, my cats also would rather just like up the warm liquid and leave the meat pieces as well)

The most obvious way to see if your cat is getting enough nutrition is to weigh her on a weekly or monthly basis. This way you can see if her weight is going up or down.

Alternatively, you could also assess her body condition status. Are her ribs clearly visible? Is her spine visible? These are easy signs that your cat could be undernourished.

But I suspect your cat is probably in good body condition and is very healthy. She is just a picky eater.

Thanks, Dr. Chris
