Lab with prostatitis

by jj
(ny,united states )

I have an 11 year old lab. He has had a recent history of prostatitis that was always cleared up via antibiotics. Recently he cant go for a walk without squatting every 2 seconds to pee. I had his blood work checked and everything seemed to be ok. Even his prostate was ok. The vet i took him to said he may have neve issues in his GI tract (peristalsis etc..). I guess the general idea he had was that he had nerve innervation. He put my dog on prednisone and it had little effect other than speeding him up and making the Poly (dipsia/phagia/uria) unbearable. I guess I am wondering what to do next. My vet actual has little else to offer. I am a pharmacist and understand medicine very well so any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi JJ,

The frequent urination makes me think of urinary tract infection because that is a main sign of infection. It is possible that there could have been nerve inflammation from the prostatis like your vet said causing this. I would look for other signs of infection first before looking into something else. Blood in the urine, urinalysis, to rule out infection before looking elsewhere.
