Lab with seizures and phenobarbital

I have a 4.5 year old Black Lab who has had seizures every 8-12 weeks over the last year. My vet gave me phenobarbital to give her and I'm uncomfortable about it. Is this standard procedure to give this to her on a daily basis? I do trust my vet, but was hoping for a second opinion. Hi,

Sorry to hear about your dog. It is very common to start dogs on phenobarbital and it is very safe and has been used a long time for this. Most dogs can have their seizures controlled just with this medication alone. The main thing is to stay in good communication with your vet about how your dog is doing on this medication.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
