AKC Group: Sporting Group The Labrador Retriever dog is usually the #1 dog breed in America. The prototypical great family dog, it originated from Newfoundland, Canada. A sporting dog that loves to play and hunt. HistoryLabrador Retrievers, developed in Newfoundland, were at first utilized to work with fisherman, assisting to take in nets and capture fish that got loose from the nets. After being crossed with Spaniels, Setters, and other Retrievers, the Labrador retriever perfected its abilities as a genuine retriever.Physical FeaturesThe dog is a firmly built, medium-sized, athletically sound dog. Its build allows it the ability to hunt upland or waterfowl game for extended hours under tough situations. The height at the withers is 22 to 25 inches tall, for a bitch, 21 to 24 inches.Any difference more than half an inch below or above these heights is disqualified. Estimated weight of bitches and dogs in working state: dogs sixty five to eighty pounds; bitches fifty five to seventy pounds. The Labrador retriever colors of coat are black, chocolate and yellow. Any shade or a mix of colors is disqualified. A little white spot just right at the chest is allowable, but not appealing. White hairs from scarring or aging are allowed. PersonalityThe best personality is just one of a generously, confident, tractable nature; desirous to please and non-aggressive to animal or man.
