AKC Group: Non-Sporting Group The Lowchen dog is one of the rarest breeds of dog in the world. Originally from European courts, it was usually trimmed to look like a lion. If you can find one for sale, they usually make a great family dog. HistoryThe Lowchen has been around for about four hundred years, recognized as a companion dog in Pre-Renaissance Europe where women of the court groomed it in the likeness of a small lion. These dogs were famous as foot comforters and warmers; their revealed skin allowed women to warm their feet as well as prevented infestation and matting.Physical FeaturesThe Lowchen dog is a smaller dog with a balanced body; a somewhat short, broad muzzle and topskull; and a proud, energetic gait that accentuates the lion cut having a long streaming mane. These essential characteristics, mixed with a positive and outgoing attitude, bring about a dog of excellent style.The Lowchen coat is wavy and long, but not curly. The most famous colors are black lemon and white but likewise come in speckled shading. Ideally, mature dogs and bitches are between twelve to thirteen inches at the withers. Height can vary one inch below or above this ideal. The neck is of excellent length with a moderate arch, fitting well into the top line and shoulders. Head is lifted high when the breed is moving. PersonalityHe is an affectionate, cheerful, lively dog. Intelligent and sociable, it's eager to discover. These canines are fearless, but sensitive and gentle. Lowchen quickly learn and show little problem in their training. Lively, they're good with kids most likely will do alright with other breeds and also non-canine animals.
