Maine Coon Cat Waking Us Up Early Every Morning

by Philisia

I have a male Maine Coon just over 3 yrs old. When he arrived he was 3mths old and we allowed him in the bedroom for about the first 8mths, We put a stop to it as there was so much hair in the bedroom. Well he was fine up until about maybe 9mths to a year ago then started scratching and howling on the bedroom door during the night most nights, like hysterical screams and fast scratching!.

First of all it was the odd night and i used to get up and sleep on the sofa but i had to put a stop to it so when he used to do it i would open the bedroom door and squirt him with water but then he would run away before i got to the door. I've put lemon juice on the door and floor to stop him .... doesn't work. it got to a point where he would wake up half an hour before my husbands alarm so 4.20am ( i don't get up until 6am ) ! I hate to say but i get up chase him around and attempt to smack (which obviously doesn't bother him as he does it the next day !)i him put the TV on and put another bowl of water down or turn the the bath tap on and he usually doesn't make anymore noise. but the last 2 nights its been around 1.30-2am and then around 4.30am... this morning was the first morning when i thought i just cant do this anymore. he only does this because he wants me ! my husband gets up and he carries on because he cant get to me. we are very close and have an amazing bond,he does strange things like chases me around when I've got out the shower to lick my wet legs or arms, he will even put his head in the shower! my husband isn't really a cat person but they tend to just live with each other. I'm at my wits end and i just don't know what else to do. Its almost as if he is fine then he suddenly realizes that hes bored or he misses his mum ??? i love him to death but this is really testing me ???? please give me some advice... i need help !! many thanks Philisia
