AKC Group: Terrier Group The Miniature Schnauzer dog is the most popular of the 3 Schnauzer breeds, which consist of the Standard and the Giant. It was believed that the Miniature was developed by crossing it with the Standard Schnauzer, Poodle, and Affenpinscher. HistoryBased on the typical Schnauzer from Germany, the Miniature was shown as a unique dog around 1899. He was at first bred as a small plantation dog, able to hunt for all sorts of vermin, and is identifiable in German paintings dating back to the 15th century.Physical FeaturesThis Miniature Schnauzer is a strong, energetic breed of terrier type, like his bigger cousin. It has a typical Schnauzer appearance.Standing twelve to fourteen inches tall. He's sturdily built, almost square equal in shape of body length to height with lots of bone. The outer coat is hard and wiry. The chest, ear, head, neck, tail, and the body coat should be plucked. The identified colors are pepper and salt, solid black, silver and black. No pink or white skin patches shall show up everywhere on the dog. PersonalityThe Miniature Schnauzer is spirited and alert, yet obedient to order. He's intelligent, friendly and happy to please. He shouldn't be overaggressive or timid. They're lively, fun & get along with kids and love to stay with their master. Loving, eager, docile and also dedicated. With correct leadership they could be friends to other dogs. They don't possess a yappy bark.Common Health ProblemsSusceptible to diabetes, kidney stones, liver disease, skin disorders, von Willebrand's disease and cysts. Also hereditary eye problems.
