MY FEMALE GERMAN SHEPERD HAS DEVELOPED , ABSESSES

by DIANA
(CARDIFF ENGLAND)

HI MY FEMALE GERMAN SHEPERD HAS DEVELOPED , ABSESSES, THE VET SAID SHE CANT HAVE THEM REMOVED BECAUSE OF HER AGE, (SHE IS TEN) AND TO JUST BATHE THEM , HAVE DONE THIS , AND THEY HAVE BLED PROFUSELY, NOW HE SAYS HE WILL OPERATE TO REMOVE THE BIGGEST TWO, BUT SHE ALSO HAS AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN SMALLER ONES UNDER THE SKIN,, IS THIS DANGEROUS, AND WHAT HAS CAUSED THIS?

ALSO IS THERE ANY THING I CAN DO IN PARTICULAR TO HELP HER , SHE ALSO HAS ATHRITIS.-------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, sorry to hear about your dog. The normal treatment for abscesses are to lance them and then to drain them. Normally abscesses aren't dangerous, but I'm not sure where they are located on your dog, so it is hard to say.

German sheppards are prone to anal furunculosis which is also called perianal fistula or perianal sinus. As the disease progresses straining, with painful defecation, often with blood streaked feces may be noticed. There can be excessive licking and self-mutilation with a reluctance to sit.

This disease areas as multiple chronic fistulous tracks or ulcerating sinuses involving the whole of the anal region and surrounding skin.

The condition is not fully understood, so there are many different treatments. The basic treatment is clipping around the area so more oxygen can get into that area, along with baths. Surgery is also used to remove infected tissue.

Thanks, Dr. Chris
