Mysterious Sherwood Forest Illness - Killing Dogsby Dr. Chris
September 26, 2010 Dogs walking through Sherwood Forest this fall are becoming sick, and others are dying. The famous Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire has been making dogs sick for the last two fall seasons according to local experts. Apparently last season, 4 dogs died, and another 14 more were sick after they were walked through Sherwood Forest by their owners. People are now worried that this unidentified disease is back after 8 dogs were sick and 1 dog has died this year after visiting the forests. The UK Forestry Commission is telling owners to keep pets on their leashes when they are walking through the forest. Apparently pesticides and other chemicals have been ruled out by local veterinarians. The latest theory is that the dogs may be eating poisonous mushrooms. According to Janice Dixon, most of the dogs who have become sick and died, were walked through Sherwood Forest within 24 hours. Clinical signs include diarrhea and vomiting. If the disease pattern follows last year's, by the end of September dogs should no longer be getting ill after walking through the forest. People believe that the temperature and humidity change in the forest during fall maybe causing some poisonous fungus or mushroom to grow. For more on this story check out: The UK telegraph.
