National Veterinary Technician Week October 10-16by Dr. Chris
September 16, 2010 Next month, from October 10th through the 16th we celebrate National Veterinary Technician Week. This is a week set aside to help us celebrate and to thank all the veterinary technicians who work for us and to help make our pets healthy and strong. Becoming a veterinary technician is not easy. You must graduate from a 2 or 3 year AVMA accredited school. And often many vet techs take additional courses to specialize in one area of pet health as well. In addition to that they have to take continuing education credits to stay up on the latest developments in the field of veterinary medicine. Just some of the vet tech duties that they have to do include collecting samples from pets to perform lab tests, taking a medical history from owners, placing intravenous catheters, assisting with surgical procedures, developing x-rays, and educating owners. Now there are several Veterinary Technician Specialties that are recognized by the AVMA. These include dentistry, anesthesia, internal medicine, veterinary emergency and critical care, behavior, zoology, and equine.
