New Veterinary School in Antigua!by Dr. Chris September 21, 2009 Right now there are only 28 veterinary schools in America, and because many states do not have a veterinary schools there is a shortage of veterinarians nationwide, especially in large animal practices, government, and research. It was recently announced that the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech would team up with the American University in Antigua to help train more veterinary students. The Virginia vet school would accept Veterinary students who have completed two years in Antigua (mainly doing classroom work) to finish the last two years in Virginia (learning clinical skills). One big advantage of this for students attending the Antigua school is that they would receive a degree from a U.S. school, allowing them to easily apply for a license. Licensing is a big barrier for foreign graduates like those from Mexico or other nations, who want to practice here. This is a new model for veterinary education and only time will tell if it works out! P.S. Remember veterinary technician week is October 11th to the 17th.
