Otterhound Dog Breed Profileby Luke Blaise AKC Group: Hound Group The Otterhound dog is unusual because it is a hound dog with a shaggy coat and webbed feet. A large dog, that is not recommended for families with small children. They are great scent hounds, closely related to the Bloodhound. HistoryWhen otters in Europe started eating all the fish in the streams and rivers, the English utilized the Otterhound to hunt and kill them. Even though today otter hunting has been prohibited, the dog still subsists.Many people beleive that this hound got its start in France & are just like the Vende hound. Otterhounds originally appeared in America around 1900. Physical FeaturesThis is a huge, coarse-coated hound having an impacting head displaying great dignity and strength. A robust body with long striding motion. It's got a very perceptive nose, and loves checking scents.It has a tough, double coat; and significant webbed feet. Males are around 27 inches at the withers, and the weight is around 115 pounds. Any shade or mixture of colors is suitable. There shouldn't be discrimination based on color. The nose must be dark and totally pigmented, slate, liver or black, according to the shade of the hound. Eye edge pigment must fit the nose. PersonalityThe Otterhound is animated and fearless. Dedicated to their families and very good with older kids. Friendly, caring and happy with lots of heart, they make great companions. Otterhounds get along with other breeds and family pets.Common Health ProblemsSome lines of Otterhound are susceptible to bloat, dysplasia, hemophilia, and thrombocytopenia. Don't overfeed for it will gain pounds easily.
