Persian Cat is Excessively Licking - Could it be a Food Allergy?

My cat has excessive licking. He is obsessed with his back. I have a cone collar on to prevent but now he is moving to his belly. My vet has tried anti anxiety medicine b/c she thinks it is stress related. No changes have been made in his home environment. The anti anxiety medicine made him act strange. He is not on it now and we are trying pain medicine. The anti anxiety medicine made him not care about anything and he did not even want any one to touch him. Could it be a food allergy? This whole thing is stressing me out. Should I try switching his food and if so what kind.

Sorry to hear about your cat's problem. It is possible your cat does have food allergies. Because unlike in dog food allergies, where the signs are mostly GI related, cats often scratch and itch, often at their faces when they have food allergies.

Since you appear to be already working with your vet. Talk with them about doing a food trial.

If it is food allergy related you should see dramatic improvement.
