Pet Study Reveals Increase in Diabetes, Fleas, and Dental Problemsby Dr. Chris
May 1, 2011 Banfield Pet Hospital recently released data on 2.1 million dogs and 450,000 cats. In this first study of its kind and size, several concerning trends about pet health were noted. Specifically rises in the number of pets with diabetes, flea problems, and dental disease. Here are the highlights of this Banfield Pet Hosptial Study: 1. Dental problems are the top medical condition for dogs and cats. 2. 78% of dogs and 68% of cats over 3 years of age have some form of dental disease. 3. The 5 breeds most likely to have dental problems are the Toy Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Pomeranian, and the Shetland Sheepdog. 4. Between 2006 and 2010 a 12.3% increase in dental diseases in dogs was seen. 5. Over the last 4 years, small breeds of dogs became more popular. The numbers of Chihuahuas and Shih Tzus increased tremendously. 6. Flea problems in pets increased 16% over the last 4 years. 7. The number of obese and diabetic dogs and cats has increased tremendously. 8. Heartworm disease is most prevalent in Mississippi where 6.7% of dogs tested positive. 9. Otitis externa is the 2nd most common problem for dogs and cats and it seems to be on the rise. 10. Hookworm infections are on the rise in pets.
