Pet Supplements: Worthwhile Or A Waste Of $$$$?
by Dr. Chris
November 5, 2008 If you are feeding a premium pet food your dog is likely getting all the nutrients he needs, however many foods do not contain enough vitamins and minerals so supplementing with a daily vitamin may be worth it.
Supplements can be used to correct some nutritional imbalances and treat some diseases in their beginning stages. Supplements can also help sometimes to reduce the amount of medication needed to control a medical condition, like omega fatty acids and dog allergies.
Other dog supplements to look for:
Arthritis: Glycosamines, fish oil, antioxidants, and herbs.
Cancer: Fish oil, glutamine, antioxidants, herbs.
Other common dog nutritional supplements are probiotics, joint supplements, digestive enzymes, liver supplements, and lots of herb remedies.
Before starting your dog on a supplement, consult your vet. Dogs sometimes need much higher doses than humans for the supplement to be effective.
Cats don't need supplements as often as dogs do. This is good, because some herbs that are good for humans can be deadly for cats.
