The Plott Hound dog is the state dog of North Carolina. It is a great coonhound, scent hound, and is great at hunting boar as well. This dog is a tremendous dog to use for whatever you want to hunt.

History

In the year 1750, the 2 young Plott siblings left Germany and migrated to America with 5 Hanoverian Hounds. In North Carolina they settled and continued to breed their dogs. They used their dogs to hunt bear and other wild game. The dog that they created, now bears their name, the Plott Hound dog.

Physical Features

The breed is a muscular, medium-sized, powerful dog. The coat is fine, glossy, short and smooth. Some Plott coats are normally only one coat, but some have a double coat.

Coat colors involve any shade of brindle, black with brindle trim, brindle with black saddle, rare buckskin and solid black. There could be a few white throughout the feet and chest. Height of the males varies from twenty to twenty five inches on the withers. While on females vary from twenty to twenty three inches on the withers.

The head is somewhat flat with well suited skin. The notable eyes are hazel or brown with black eye edges. The clinging ears are wide-set and medium in size.

Personality

The Plott hound is an amazing partner. Intelligent and loyal, the dog is quick to love and quick to learn and is great with kids. Their personable natures are certainly not noticeable on the trail. This big game scenthound and hunter has great bravery. Courageous, determined and proud.

Common Health Problems

The Plott Hound is the hardiest of coonhounds. It eats vast amounts of food quickly, that makes it prone to gastric torsion and life-threatening twisting of the stomach. Don't exercise this dog after having a big meal.
