I really don't know how to keep down vet bills, and would like to know. My cat has feline diabetes and needs daily insulin and special dietetic food from the vet, and this is a pretty expensive proposition. The treatment is worth it, because she is clearly helped by it, but decreasing the expense would be nice. Otherwise, I've always been very careful. She is an indoor pet who has always had dry food - no people food at all. I am careful not to touch or play with other animals. If I am exposed to another animal, I try to change clothes and/or wash my hands before coming in contact with my cat or her surroundings, so as not to bring in fleas, ticks or disease.
