Ragdoll Cat

The Ragdoll cat is the largest domestic cat breed, with some reaching weights of up to 35 pounds. It is a true American breed of cat having been developed in the 1970’s in California by a woman that is now deceased, Ann Baker.

Ann developed the Ragdoll by breeding several different breeds together. Although not clear which ones it has been shown that Persians, Angoras, and Burmese cats were likely used. All Ragdolls have bright blue eyes.

These large cats have a silky coat which some people think feels like a rabbit’s coat. The hair is long and they do shed, contrary to belief. They do require brushing to help maintain their nice coats.

The Ragdoll names come for the belief that these cats go limp when picked up, but this has also proven not to be true.

They come in 6 different colors and three different patterns. It is referred to as a pointed breed, meaning that the extremities are darker than the body, similar to Persians.

Recently the Ragamuffin cat breed has been developed from the Ragdoll cat. When looking to acquire these cats be sure to check for references of breeders. Make sure you are getting what they promise you.

If you are looking for a large docile cat that is friendly and loving the Ragdoll might be the cat for you.
