Rescue Dog Heartworm Positive, Now Coughing Real Bad and Nose Running
by Karen
We recently rescued a dog from our local Animal Shelter. We were able to bring her home after her surgery to be spayed. A couple days later we brought her to our vet to find out she had heartworms and hookworms. He gave us medicine for the hookworms, gave her a few vaccinations including one for kennel cough though she was not coughing at that point in time. She was real energetic and eating well. A few days later for 24hs she wouldn't eat and had developed a cough which sounded like hacking. Clear liquid would sometimes come out of her mouth. A day later she was eating and coughing less except for when she would play with our other dog or when she got up to walk around. A day or two later she started to cough real bad and her nose began to run and she would sneeze up green stuff. Now I know that the heartworms can cause a cough since our other dog who we also rescued from a shelter was treated for heartworms. We called our vet, and he gave us some antibiotics to give her until our apt. next week. My question is why are her symptoms getting worse even after being in a cleaner and more healthy environment and Do you think the cough and runny nose together are from the heartworms or maybe something else? We plan on treated her for the heartworms once she is a healthy candidate for treatment, but I am confused about what might cause these symptgoms?
