Review of OpenVPMS by VetAnyware
by Dr. Chris
May 1st, 2009 VetAnyware is a new software company that has just come out with a new offering called OpenVPMS. This is an open source veterinary practice management software that provides electronic health records, customer relationship management, appointment scheduling, inventory management.
There have been lots of veterinary practice software programs around for over a decade. But I believe this has a couple of huge advantages over these older programs.
First of all the program is run on an open source platform, which means you can download the software code and configure it yourself. You might think that this would be way too complicated, but even I use and an open source program already to manage this website that I configure it myself, so it is doable.
Having the open source code allows you to configure almost anything aspect of the program you want. Compare this to other programs where you have to somehow fit the management of your clinic into a rigid computer program.
The second big advantage of OpenVPMS is cloud computing. This simply means the program is run off of their servers and you have nothing to install onto your old and dusty clinic computers. All you need is internet access.
You can then check your clinic’s schedule or inventory from any computer that has internet access, even if you are at home or at a conference through a secure login.
Another great thing is that it can run on Windows or Macintosh, which is great for those of us that love our Apple computers.
