AKC Group: Hound Group The Saluki dog was recently confirmed by Science Magazine to be the oldest dog breed, dating back to over 3,500 B.C. Its DNA closely matches that of its wolf ancestors. Used extensively through the Middle East and Asian Plains, this dog is tough and has a great endurance. HistoryThe royal dog of Egypt, the Saluki is probably the most ancient known breed of dog. They were held in such great confidence that their bodies were frequently mummified just like the bodies of the Pharaohs.The breed was first utilized by the Arabs to hunt and bring down gazelle, the quickest of antelopes. When the Saluki was initially brought in to England in 1840, they were used mainly to chase hare. Physical FeaturesThe entire look of the Saluki dog must give an impression of symmetry and grace. It has great endurance, speed, and the strength to hunt gazelle or other quarry over all terrains.Male Salukis stand 23 to 28 inches tall and for the females 21 to 24 inches tall. Females can weigh up to 31 to 35 and for males from 40 to 60 pounds. The Saluki coat is smooth and silky, and a wide variety of colors is possible. Cream, fawn, grizzle and tan, golden, red, tricolor, black and tan. PersonalitySalukis are alert, calm, intelligent and sensitive with a strong-willed and aristocratic manner. This dog is friendly and loyal to its master but does not do especially well with young kids as it doesn't enjoy being bothered.Small pets should be kept away from them, but some do well with cats. Common Health ProblemsSaluki dogs should live for ten to twelve years and tend to be healthy with very few common health issues.
