Scottish Deerhound Dog Breed Profile

The Scottish Deerhound dog looks like a smaller version of the Irish Wolfhound. Really is it just a bit bigger then a Greyhound and it has a shaggy coat to keep it warm. An extremely fast dog that was originally used to hunt deer.

History

Known for hundreds of years as the Highland Deerhound, Rough Greyhound or the Scotch Greyhound, the Scottish Deerhound became an easily recognized breed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He was the very best breed to utilize on the chase for deer, and during the time, can be owned by nobody of rank less than an earl. These ownership rules almost resulted in the breed's extinction.

Physical Features

The Irish Deerhound's body's hair and neck is wiry and harsh, since the coat at the head, belly and breast is significantly softer. Coat colors consist of blue gray, gray, brindle and black, amongst others. The height of dogs differs from thirty to thirty-two inches. While the height of bitches differs from twenty-eight inches higher. The weight varies between 85 to 110 pounds in dogs, and from 75 to 95 pounds in bitches.

Personality

The breed is large, but it has a particular regal charm, dignity, and elegance about him. Very devoted and loyal, the dog is a docile and caring breed, and it is a bad choice for anyone trying to find a guard dog or watchdog! These dogs have great speed and agility, and need lots of space to move around and exercise.

The dog is of a sweet and sensitive nature but can often be stubborn. He is most affectionate to those who train and own him. Early socializing is very important in this breed to develop a stable temperament and attitude.

Common Health Problems

The life span of the Irish Deerhound is about 8 to 11 years, and there are many of health issues to check on this breed. This includes bloat, bone cancer, OCD, heart disease, and sensitivity to drugs and chemicals. The parents of Scottish Deerhound puppies must have OFA certificates.
