AKC Group: Terrier Group The Sealyham Terrier dog is originally from Wales. It's a small dog that is rarely over 1 foot tall, and adults are often prone to obesity. It's determined attitude can still make it a good in-house guard dog. HistoryIt was created in Wales. The Sealyham terrier ancestors include the West Highland white terrier, the Wirehaired Fox Terrier, the Dandies Dinmont Terrier and the Bull Terrier. The dog gets its name from Haverford west, Sealy Ham, Wales, the land of Captain John Edwards, who produced this dog to hunt otter and fox. Always ready and incredibly fast, the Sealyham Terrier's white coat was required so they can be known from the small game they hunted!Physical FeaturesSturdy in build and small in size, the Sealyham Terrier is a strong small dog having an alert appearance. The coat of this dog is climate resistant beneath, with a wiry external coat. These breeds are white in color and could have markings in colors including tan, lemon, gray, badger.He has also a unique mustache, and folded, small ears. The body weight of the Sealyham is about 21 to 23 pounds for females and 23 to 25 pounds for males. The height of these dogs is about 10 to 11 inches. The Sealyham Terrier's wiry, weather-resistant double coat needs to be all white. Lemon, tan or badger-colored markings are permitted on the ears and head. PersonalityAn established, willful, and alert small dog, he is a demanding and independent dog. These dogs are often strong stubborn dogs, and need training.This dog must be socialized in the early stages to develop a stable character, and strong, consistent training is very important. These dogs enjoy searching. They have a very loud bark as well. Common Health ProblemsThe life span of the Sealyham terrier is just about 12-15 years. There are several of health issues to consider on this breed, this includes cataracts, deafness, heart problems, glaucoma, PRA, and spinal problems.
