AKC Group: Herding Group The Sheltie or the Shetland Sheepdog is basically a smaller version of the Collie. Originally from the Shetland Islands, this dog is a very quick learner and one of the most intelligent breeds. HistoryLike the Collie, the Sheltie's background draws back to the Border Collie of Scotland. The Shetland Sheepdog was also crossed at some point with the Rough Collie, Icelandic Sheepdog, the Greenland Yakki, and the Pomeranian.Physical FeaturesThe Shetland Sheepdog is an alert, longhaired, rough-coated, small herding dog. He or she must be agile, sturdy and sound.The coat is double layered. The outer coat comprising harsh hair, long, straight; the undercoat short, hairy, and thick. Coat colors could be blue merle, black, or sable with various markings of white and tan. The dog must stand between thirteen and sixteen inches on the shoulder. The body is longer then it is tall. PersonalityThe Sheltie dog is greatly loyal, affectionate, and attentive to his master. Very intelligent and excels in dog field trials. Makes an excellent watch dog.Common Health ProblemsShetland Sheepdogs are typically healthy, particularly when they've been bred carefully. On the other hand there are several conditions which influence herding dogs additionally, like Sheltie skin problems, hip and knee abnormalities, and eye problems.
