AKC Group: Terrier Group The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier dog started off as a popular farm dog in Ireland. As its name signifies, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is valued because of its coat that is silky and soft and of cozy wheaten color. Today it makes a great family dog and is great for those with allergies. HistoryKnown for over two centuries in Ireland, the "Wheaten" conveys prevalent origins with the Irish terrier and the Kerry Blue.They were considered the poor man's dog, an all-purpose farm breed, inclined to patrolling the edges of small farms, clearing them of vermin and herding sheep, and hunting along with his master. Physical FeaturesThe breed is a hardy, medium-sized, well balanced athletic terrier, the outline is square. He could be recognized by his gently, silky, soft waving coat of comfy wheaten color and the specifically constant temperament.The breed needs moderation both in presentation and structure, and any exaggerations will be shunned. He must present the entire look of a happy and alert animal, well coordinated, strong and graceful. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier dog should be eighteen to nineteen inches at the withers. The bitch should be seventeen to eighteen inches at the withers, the best being seventeen and a half inches. Dogs should weigh thirty five - forty pounds; bitches thirty - thirty five pounds. PersonalityThe dog is a jolly, happy, and lively dog. He's confident, sociable, and sometimes acts just like a puppy even as he matures. These breeds have a light quantity of energy, and like energetic exercise and play. The dog needs a secure and safe area where to exercise and play with high walls, as he might or else get away.Common Health ProblemsThe life span of this breed is around twelve-fourteen years, and there are numerous of health issues to consider with this breed.
