AKC Group: Working Group The Standard Schnauzer is the main breed of the three types Schnauzer. The other two types of Schnauzer are the Giant and the Miniature.It is a medium sized dog that has a characteristic mustache, whiskers, and eyebrows. It is a working dog used for a wide variety of services. HistoryThe Standard Schnauzer comes from Germany and it is the most ancient of the 3 Schnauzer dogs. These Schnauzers got the name Standard Schnauzer. The dog's name based on the German word "Schnauze", meaning "muzzle". The dogs functioned as messenger dogs in WWI as a livestock guardians, stable guarder, vermin hunter and retrievers. The dog is the original Schnauzer from which the Giant and Miniature breeds were established in the late 1800's. They first came to the USA around 1900. Physical FeaturesStandard Schnauzers will always be salt or pepper or less typically black in color. They have a stiff and wiry hair coat on the body akin to those of other wirehaired dogs. Their hair will constantly grow long without correctly losing, but contrary to everyday opinion Standard Schnauzers aren't hypo-allergenic and all of them shed to some extent. The height of dogs around 18-20 inches. The weight is around 35 pounds. PersonalityThe Standard Schnauzer makes an excellent guard and watch dog. They're energetic, yet not restless if given adequate exercise. Passionate, courageous and loving, they tend to have the character of a terrier. Vivid, clever, and playful, they need company and are good dogs for traveling. This dog is considered very intelligent and a quick learner. Common Health ProblemsSome are susceptible to hip dysplasia and certain cancers.
