Swedish Vallhund Dog Breed Profileby Luke Blaise AKC Group: Herding Group The Swedish Vallhund dog is known as the "Viking dog." It was used over 1,000 years ago as a cattle herder for the Vikings. Although a short stocky dog, it is very strong. It normally comes with a Sable colored coat and the tail is often docked. HistoryThe Swedish Vallhund could be related to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. The dog was taken to Wales by Vikings in 800's. People of the time would refer to this breed as the "Vikingarnas Hund," which means the "Viking Dog." "Vallhund", means "herding dog". Several of the breed's skills are cattle drover, ratter and a watchdog. today this breed is still used in many dogs skill competitions.Physical FeaturesThe Swedish Vallhund dog's coat must be harsh and of medium length. The topcoat is tight and close and the basecoat is dense and soft. The height for these small dogs varies from 12.5 - 13.5 inches for males and 11.5-12.5 inches for females. The weight varies from 20-35 pounds. Some vallhunds are thought somewhat pudgy. The Swedish vallhund can be obese; But with the short legs and long body these dogs tend to look heavier than what they really are.The coat is normally in a stable pattern, with various colors seen. They could vary from gray to red, with various shades in between. PersonalityThe Swedish Vallhund dog makes a great pet and may also be used for ratting and herding. They really like human attention and very dedicated to their masters. They're a clownish kind of dog and could be a show off sometimes. The dog is normally friendly, but is cautious around strangers. Early socialization is a great way to help make them more sociable. They'll try to guard your house and keep your family safe.Common Health ProblemsThis breed is normally very healthy. However due to their confirmation, many may be prone to obesity.
