Pits are not #1 on the bite list and did you know Golden Retrievers are # 3 ?! Did you know that at MOST county shelters if a dog is a Pit, Rottie, Chow, or Dobe they are instantly put down with no questions asked? I do this for a living (save dogs lives) and my pits are my best dogs. If raised right they get along with everyone. They are VERY protective of "their people" but will love everyone if no aggression is shown.

pitbulls in shelters

That is true that some states automatically put down certain breeds and won't even adopt them out! I was thinking what you said about pitbulls (and other breeds) being very protective of their owners. Sometimes that is where the problem lies. A dog can interpret an action or gesture as a threat to their human and surprise an unknowing person by going after them. Each dog is so different in how they react to things. I was talking to a woman and her 4 year old on the street, petting their pit bull mix, and he suddently growled and lunged at me. I am still trying to figure out what I did, but i may never know! He may have been protecting his family in his eyes. No harm done, and it wasn't a big deal to me.
