The Cat's Meow Is Missing!

by Doug
(Foster City, CA USA)

Our 14 year female cat has recently lost her voice. She used to have a good hearty "meow" but has recently (for a couple of weeks now) become weak and slightly hoarse. She otherwise seems healthy and active.

I am especially concerned because the same thing happened to our previous cat and sadly it was the first symptom of what turned out to be a fatal throat tumor.

1. has your cat lost weight recently -- no she seams to be the same although have you tried to put a cat on a scale..:)

2. any behavior changes - no she does not seem to be behaving any differently.

3. any changes in appetite - no - she is eating and drinking plenty.

4. any changes in mood - no her mood is good and the same.

I know giving you a bunch of "no" answers doesn't help a whole lot, but it's kinda the reason we haven't rushed her to the vet. She seams just fine other than her meow... I know people can loose their voices and feel okay - can the same happen with a feline?

Reasons Why Cat's Lose Their Meow
by: Anonymous

Sorry to hear about your cat's problem. As you know there are many reasons why a cat might lose its meow, some very serious ones.

You know of tumors, but viruses and other inflammatory conditions can cause a cat to lose it's meow.

A couple of things to think about:

1. has your cat lost weight recently
2. any behavior changes
3. any changes in appetite
4. any changes in mood

Answering these questions can help us decide if the cause might be serious.
