Thinking About Becoming A Vet Tech?by Dr. Chris September 7, 2009 Qualified veterinary technicians are in great demand, and there has never been a better time to become a vet tech in my opinion. The ratio of veterinarians to registered vet techs is 2 to 1, which shows you how bad the shortage is. One of the best reasons to become a vet tech right now is that now more than ever, veterinarians are finally starting to see the value of a trained veterinary technician. With most vets being over worked, a trained vet tech can perform many duties that vet would have done themselves in the past. This helps to free up a vet’s time so they can spend more time with clients and properly filling out health records. The biggest reason that vet techs have not been fully utilized in the past is because veterinarians, not trained in business skills, had no idea on how to fully leverage a vet tech to help a practice succeed. Another great reason to become a vet tech, is it is easy to take lessons online today, if you can’t make it full time to a vet tech school near you. While you have to do some of the curriculum in a clinic, online schools allow you to at least do the classroom sessions over the Internet. Remember, before you sign up for a vet tech course; make sure it is approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association. If you want to read a blog written by a vet tech go to: Vet Tech Blog.
