those poor, misunderstood pit bulls...
by pit bull mom
the media has given pit bulls a bad rap over the years and i understand the general public's fear and misgivings about the breed in general. my response to those fearful, misinformed individuals? take the time to get to know a well-behaved, properly trained and socialized pit bull before writing the breed off. i currently own a 2 year old female pit bull and have owned other pits in the past and i have never, ever had one bite, or attempt to bite me or any one else FOR ANY REASON! my dogs have been raised as part of our family, received basic obedience training, and been exposed to a variety of people, places, and situations from the time they were very young. they love adults and children alike (although my current female has a big soft spot for the little ones), are curious but not aggressive towards our other household pets (yes, they do chase the cat on occasion), and can be trusted to behave well out and about in the real world (leashed, of course). you see, my dogs have been loved, trained, and brought up in a caring, responsible environment. they cannot be compared to those poor, neglected, abused pit bulls that are fought, tortured, taunted, ignored, and taught to be viscous. any dog, no matter what breed, can be taught to be aggressive and can be made to attack... cocker spaniels, german shepherds, black labs, and pit bulls, alike. this is not the fault of the dog... it is the fault of the owner, and the owner should be held responsible, both legally and financially, for his dogs behavior. members of my own family were uneasy around my dogs until spending time with them and getting to know them. now, they are welcome at any and all family get togethers, "baby-sit" the grandchildren for hours on end, and are welcome to visit overnight when mom and dad are out of town. i cannot say enough about this loyal, gentle breed. if you don't believe me, make it a point to get to know one and then ask yourself if they are really ALL viscous and not to be trusted... i bet you change your mind!
