Time between puppies delivered

by Tina
(bulgaria)

our dog had a puppy just over 6 hours ago and now seems to have finished in labour, she is a large dog and had gained a lot of weight, the puppy was tiny and was dead at birth ,is it likely she will not have any more, or is this usual to have such a long wait inbetween pups

Hi Tina,

Time between delivery of puppies can be as short as 20 minutes to as long as 3 hours. It is unusual for a dog to just have one pup (although I don't know the breed of this dog).

I would palpate the abdomen to see if you can feel any more pups inside. Also and examine by your vet would be good, because they will have more experience in palpating and assisting in deliveries.

Thanks,

Dr. Chris
