July 5, 2010 In Bellevue, Iowa, at the annual 4th of July parade, one woman was killed and 23 others were injured. According to reports, a team of runaway horses pulling a carriage ran through a crowd of parade onlookers.
Bellevue is a quiet town along the Mississippi river and has a population of 2,350. Its annual Heritage Days parade is a big draw for the community.
Apparently one of the horses bridles came loose right before the horses took off. Eventually the carriage become detached from the horses who continued to run. They were eventually caught after being surrounded by vehicles.
At least half of the injured were under 12 years of age, children sitting on the curb watching the parade.
